Two painters are painting plaques for the numbers of the houses of Puzzle Street (which are consecutive starting with one). In the time it takes the younger one to paint 4 digits, the older painter paints 5 digits. The younger begins with the numbers 1, 2, 3.... and the older painter with the last ones. They paint the last house plaque at the same time and each one has painted the same number of plaques. How many houses are there on the street ?
Ans: There are totally 45 houses.

There are two painters A and B and A paints 4 digits and B paints 5 digits -
If we assume there are X houses and both have painted same no of houses ,then ratio of the digits would be -
9 + 2 * (X/2 -9)
_________________ = 4/5
(X/2) * 2
If we solve the above eqaution would be 45.
and there will be total digits painted by both will be
9+ 2 * (45 - 9) = 81
A painted - 36 digits
B painted - 45 digits
Both painted 22 houses each and were painting the digits for 45th house togeather.
I think the fun here is to prove that there is no valid solution say when number of houses is more than 99 or say more than 999 or say more than 9999 etc

there are total 9 letters of which younger one can take benifit of...to counter this elder one has to paint 9*5 i.e. 45 digits...since out of this 45 , one digit is of the house both are painting together..so in total number of house elder one is taking is (45-1)/2 i.e. 22 .
so total number of houses are 22*2 + 1 i.e 45
